The 36th pick in the Sal’s NZ NBL was a very familiar name to Breaker Nation. Breakers Director of Player Development Rashid Al-Kaleem will remarkably lace up and step onto the hardwood for the fledging Auckland Huskies – and although the team is new, the faces are not. “Six of the roster came from my Breakers Academy and at the first practice, there were 15 of us and I knew 11 people,” said Al-Kaleem.

The Breakers coaching staff have mixed things up for the players at training by bringing former WBO Heavyweight Boxing Champion Joseph Parker in to teach them a few skills today. But whereas the players could have been mistaken in thinking it was a session for the cameras – what transpired was the toughest 80 minute workout the players have experienced in a year. Captain Tom Abercrombie admits he and the players were exhausted by the end of it all.

Kiwi NBA Superstar Steven Adams has praised the systems run by Dan Shamir after his Oklahoma City Thunder beat the SKY Sport Breakers 110-84 at Chesapeake Energy Arena. He has labelled the Israeli smart and admits the scoreline did not reflect the systems the Breakers are ironing out in pre-season. “They have a good system because they run a lot of stuff, that new coach in, he’s a smart dude”, said Adams. “He knows his stuff is what I’m saying and the actions of what they’re doing, a lot of pace, they try to pay with a lot of pace, confusion stuff. “That’s why they got a couple of lay ups, (they) just kept putting us under different actions and miss communication, downhill, all that sort of stuff”. Playing against his fellow countrymen, Adams starred with 19 points and 10 rebounds. His message to Breakers fans is that the team is heading in the right direction ahead and nothing should be read into losing to an NBA side in pre-season. “It’s just different going against NBA players, even the way they call the games, it’s just very different, the physicality is a bit different (too)”, said Adams. Director of Basketball Dan Shamir agrees the scoreline counts for nothing. “Part of playing against NBA teams is that you don’t really know where you are with our competition, it wasn’t good today, we totally lost our way but, there are a lot of factors into that is it’s a good team, it’s a good team in front of us”, said Shamir. Rob Loe had an impressive performance for the Breakers with 19 points and five rebounds. He was well supported by Scotty Hopson, who recorded 15 points and six rebounds while Corey Webster chimed in with 10 points. "I think these two games really prepared all of us for just for what we know that’s ahead", said RJ Hampton. "We have Sydney two games in a row so I think we will be well prepared for them". The Breakers NBL season begins against the Kings in Australia next Friday before heading to Spark Arena for the return game next Sunday.

Sky Sport Breakers head coach Dan Shamir is predicting the A-NBL will go from strength to strength post COVID-19 and he and his assistants Mody Maor and Chanel Pompallier are already in full preparation for a full 28-game regular season. While professional basketball leagues across the world are on indefinite hiatus, the five core contracted Breakers are back training with a start date rumoured to be November or December. Shamir predicts the Breakers could benefit from worldwide confusion on when other professional basketball leagues start again with many top players off contract and wondering where their next pay cheque is coming from.

Breakers owner and chief executive Matt Walsh is assuring kiwi-based fans there is no secret, behind the scenes, discussion to relocate to Australia for the next season because of the coronavirus pandemic.
